CHAPEL HILL-AP — Starmount coach Joe Hutchens took over the football team this year and led it to the school's first state championship in any sport.

Starmount beat North Edgecombe 22-20 Saturday in Chapel Hill to win the Class 1-A football championship.

The win by Starmount was its 100th of the decade with only 21 defeats.

The Rams were leading by eight and appeared to have the game sewed up with 4:20 left. But North Edgecombe got a 64-yard scoring pass from Rodney Milbourne to Donald Whitehead on fourth down with 2:47 left to pull within two and stun Starmount.

But Reese Williams was stopped on a two-point conversion attempt on a rush into the middle of the Starmount defensive line.

"I'm proud of our kids, and what a turn-around they made on our season," says Raymond Cobb, North Edgecombe's head coach. "They have made us all proud, and congratulations to Starmount."

North Edgecombe is the first sixteenth seed to ever make it to the state finals.
