Athens Drive Wins Trip to Five-County Stadium

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — It was Apex and Athens Drive battling for the Eastern 4A baseball championship. The winner would win a trip to the state championship next weekend.

Apex jumped out for the early lead. Landon Powell drilled a run-scoring double for the Cougars in the first. The advantage would not last long. Chris Johnson slams Tom Graham's third pitch over the left field fence for a one-all tie in the first.

The Jaguars added four more in the inning. Two runs scored on Richard Hopp. Athens Drive would never trail again. The Jags put the game away with a four-run fourth. Josh Hamilton had a two run single. Athens Drive moves to the state finals. The Jags win 10-6.

"They did have high expectations," says Coach John Thompson of Athens Drive. "It's tough to get the state championship. I'm very, very proud of them."

Twenty-three and three Athens Drive will tangle with the 4A Western champion next weekend at Five-County Stadium in Zebulon.
