Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — The heat wave continues, but it is not just those scorching temperatures that can hurt us.Ozone levels are highand that means the air is unhealthy to breathe across the Triangle.

Chapel Hilltown leaders want to help protect the air, so the town is offering free bus rides. Officials hope the offer will encourage more people to leave their cars at home.

The Town Council adopted the measure as part of the state's newair quality awareness program.

Although riders get a lift for free, the town ends up paying the price -- $20,000 in lost revenue. Chapel Hill, Carrboro andUNCare splitting the tab.

Officials say it is a small price to pay to help improve the air quality in this area.

Taking advantage of free public transportation or car pooling are a few of the ways you can help reduce dangerous ozone levels.

Here are some others:
  • Try to avoid letting your car idle for long periods of time.
  • Wait until after 6 p.m. to fill up your gas tank or mow the lawn.
