John Rushton, associate manager of thePizza Inn, was shot to death during the attempted robbery.

Police say the incident happened between 9:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant is located in the Winoca Shopping Center on Ward Boulevard.

Police still do not know why the gunmen opened fire. They tell WRAL the two male suspects allegedly walked into the take-out area inside the restaurant, demanded cash and then gunned down Rushton.

About a half-dozen customers were in the restaurant eating at the time of the shooting. No other employees or customers in the restaurant were hurt.

Police say the suspects were wearing ski masks at the time of the shooting. Police say that they may have found some clothing left behind by the suspects and searched a wooded area near the restaurant for evidence.

Rushton, who worked at the restaurant for two years, leaves behind a wife and four children; three of the children are under age five.

The corporation that owns the Wilson restaurant is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the two suspects. They are also providing counseling to restaurant employees.
