JOHNSTON COUNTY — A New Year's Eve crash along Interstate 40 in Johnston County has left two people dead.
The accident happened in the westbound lanes near the Meadow Road exit around 10:30 p.m. Friday evening.
Police have identified the victims as 44-year-old Carol Cannady Swindell of Wrightsville Beach, and her 4-year-old son Cecil Ray Cannady.
Investigators say the the vehicle apparently left the road, flipped several times and came to rest on the other side of roadway. No other vehicles were involved.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident, but say there are no signs of alcohol, but that speed may have been a factor.
