Police departments around the country, including in Durham and Raleigh, distributed the locks to citizens. TheConsumer Product Safety Commissionfound all but one of the 32 gun locks it tested could be opened without the key.
Durham and Raleigh police departments suspended their gun lock programs months ago when the national program's sponsor halted distribution of the locks. The locks could be easily popped open with a simple tap on the ground.
The government's voluntary recall includes 400,000 locks. People who received the "Project HomeSafe" gun locks should call800-726-6444to receive a free replacement lock.
Until receiving the new lock, the CPSC advises people to keep the old lock on their gun.
