No Dialtones in Downtown Durham

Posted Updated

DURHAM — People in downtown Durham are having a quieter than usual Monday. No phones are ringing -- and no dial tones are being heard.

GTE says a utility crew accidentally severed two phone cables Friday night after the crew failed to call ahead to find out where the cables were located.

GTE says phone restoration is taking a bit longer than they expected. It will now be sometime Monday evening before the customers get their phone service back.

Repair crews worked Saturday to fix the problem, but the hold-up is being attributed to the weather, and the complexity of the job.
