2 Charged With Trying to Rape Mentally Challenged Man

Two Harnett County residents have been charged with attempting to rape a mentally challenged man, authorities said.

LILLINGTON, N.C. — Two Harnett County residents have been charged with attempting to rape a mentally challenged man, authorities said.

George Gerald Tart, 41, and Connie Demetris Smith, 46, both of Linden, each face eight counts of attempted first-degree rape and eight counts of conspiracy to commit rape and sexual battery, authorities said. Tart also is charged with one count of second-degree sexual offense.

Tart and Smith are being held in the Harnett County Detention Center on $125,000 bonds.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office didn't provide details of the alleged assaults, except to say that the alleged victim is a mentally challenged man.
