RALEIGH, N.C. — Despite more cars on the road, the Highway Patrol responded to fewer accidents in 2005.
Overall, the patrol responded to more than 125,000 accidents last year. That's down about 3.5 percent.
The number of fatal accidents also dropped. More than 1,100 people died on the roads, which is more than a 6 percent drop. The agency credits stepped up enforcement for the safer roads.
