Service Restored To UNC Campus After Water Main Breaks

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A water main leak on Cameron Avenue in Chapel Hill caused a disruption in service to parts of the UNC campus early Wednesday.

Officials with the Orange Water and Sewer Authority learned of the leak, located near the Playmakers Theatre and Alumni Lane, Tuesday night. As a result, some dorms and classroom buildings had problems with water. Classes in the affected buildings went on as scheduled Wednesday morning.

Officials said that repairs were completed to the water main early Wednesday afternoon, and water service was restored to all buildings except Old East. Cameron Avenue, however, remained closed to through traffic between South Columbia and Raleigh streets, pending street restoration in the work area.

Customers in the area may notice discoloration or air bubbles in water, OWASA officials said, but the water is safe to drink. Customers who see discoloration should run cold water through a faucet for a few minutes until the water and/or air bubbles clear.
