2 Die in Apex Plane Crash

Posted Updated

APEX — The FAA and NTSB are investigating a plane crash that killed a pilot and his young passenger in Apex Sunday afternoon.

The RV4, an experimental plane, crashed just after taking off from Cox Airport.

Witnesses told police they heard the engine cut out. Then, the home-built RV4 went down in a yard.

The pilot was Paul Spampinatto, 30, of Cary and Nicholas Miracola, 11, also of Cary.

Both victims were taken to WakeMed where they were pronounced dead from head trauma.

The plane was towed to Cox Airport.

Another pilot, Dane Heule, also flies the RV4. He said the RV4 is built to high strength tolerances and is inspected annually. Heule said the flaps were down and that the pilot was aiming at a good spot for landing.
