Pilot Released From Hospital After Single-Engine Plane Misses Runway at Fayetteville Airport

FAYETTEVILLE — A male pilot was treated and released from Cape Fear Hospital after being rescued from asingle-engine Cessna planethat made an emergency landing at Fayetteville Regional Airport just after 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Pilot Bob Koons landed the plane about 500 feet short of runway 22, in a wooded, marshy area. The area is not accessible to cars, only trucks and four-wheel drive vehicles.

Officials say Koons was alert and in good spirits, even after crews spent more than an hour trying to reach him.

A firefighter participating in the rescue suffered heat-related injuries.

The aircraft was also damaged.

The airport remained open throughout the incident, and the two major airlines expected all scheduled flights to run on time.
