Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — UNC fans on Franklin Street are preparing for the possibility of one wild party Saturday night.

If the Tar Heels win, Chapel Hill police expect a crowd of 30,000 people to storm the streets for a post-game celebration.

Police plan to have 125 officers on duty to control the crowd.

Many stores plan to board windows. On Friday, fans spent their time stocking up on game necessities.

"If they win and go all the way to Monday night, it's going to be sheer pandemonium on Franklin Street," says UNC fan Salatheal Hasty.

Police have made the following preparations in advance of the big game:
  • Restaurants are asked not to serve alcohol in glass containers
  • Stores are not to sell Carolina blue paint
  • Firefighters are on standby to douse bonfires
  • 75 public works employees are ready to clean streets and block traffic
  • Chapel Hill police are warning people that if they park on Franklin Street on Saturday, their car will be ticketed and towed.

An additional 200 officers from around the Piedmont are on call for Monday if the Tar Heels advance to the national championship. From staff and wire reportsandMichelle Singer
