RALEIGH — Raleigh police are investigating an accident that they say should have never happened.

Police shut down two lanes of Interstate 440 West after a bicyclist was hit near the Hammond Street exit around 8 p.m.

Police identified the victim as 24-year-old Darryl O. Woody of Hidden Oaks Drive in Raleigh.

They say the accident occurred as he was trying to cross the Beltline.

There is no word yet if the driver of the vehicle that struck Woody will be charged.

Riding a bike on the Beltline is illegal.
