COLUMBIA — Wake Forest's Dave Odom took the job today as South Carolina's new basketball coach.
Odom says he met briefly with the Gamecock players moments before his 5p.m.news conference. The 58-year-old Odom says he asked the players to give him a chance to be their friend first and then their coach.
Athletic director Mike McGee has said he wanted to hire a proven winner and Odom seems to fit the bill.
Odom has a 240-132 record in 12 seasons at Wake Forest. His Deacons have gone to the postseason in each of the last eleven years.
Odom replaces Eddie Fogler who resigned March 12th after his contract was --not-- renewed. South Carolina went 15-15 last season, ending with a loss in the N.I.T.
Sports information director Kerry Tharp says Kentucky's Tubby Smith and Connecticut's Jim Calhoun were both offered the job but turned it down.
