Cary Construction Accident Kills One, Injures Three

Posted Updated

CARY — A home construction accident inCaryWednesday afternoon killed one worker and injured three others.

At about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, a platform high above what would be the front door of a new house came crashing down.

Emergency crews rushed to the Kensington subdivision as soon as they received the call. When they arrived at the house under construction, they found three men lying on the ground in pain.

One man who was under the rubble was dead. Efforts by other construction workers to save his life failed.

"He had a little bit of a heartbeat and little breathing, but by that time, the EMTs had already been here. I just feel really bad because there was nothing me or my boss could do to help them," said worker Scott Kimbell.

Kimbell was working on a house nearby when a worker ran to him for help. Authorities say the injured men were working on top of a 20-foot high platform that collapsed and killed the worker standing below.

"Something came loose. I don't know where it fell from the top or where the platform came loose. I haven't gotten that information," said Chief Eddie Wimberly of the Cary EMS.

Cary Police andOSHAinvestigators will try to piece together what exactly happened. For other construction workers, it is a stark reminder of the dangers of their jobs.

"Now, everybody needs to be a little safer," said Kimble.

The names of the victims have not been released. The injured men have been taken toWakeMedwhere they are being treated for multiple injuries.
