Fires Claim Two Lives Wednesday

HENDERSON — Fire investigators are looking into the cause of two separate fires which claimed two lives Wednesday.

Dennis Robertson, 47, died in his bedroom on Charles Street in Henderson. Three apartments were damaged by the fire.

Investigators say the fire, which started in a mattress, was likely caused by a lit cigarette.

Near Franklinton, firefighters were able to extinguish a fire, but were unable to prevent a tragedy.

Ora Byrd, 73, was killed in the fire which happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday on Beechwood Drive.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department says the fire started in a chair that is powered by electricity.

The victim's husband had been awakened after smelling smoke. He managed to escape.

Monday, afire in Oxfordclaimed the lives of four elderly family members.
