RALEIGH, N.C. — A 13-year-old girl was killed Tuesday night and her mother was wounded in a shooting at a north Raleigh apartment complex, police said.
The shootings occurred at about 9 p.m. Tuesday at Remington on the Green Apartments at 4401 Green Road, police said.

Gelnirys Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene. Milagros Ortega, 33, was transported to WakeMed for treatment. There was no word on her condition early Wednesday.

Police haven't released any information about a possible suspect or a motive in the shootings. But Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue said Wednesday morning that the shootings weren't random acts of violence.

"We are still not at a point in the investigation where we can discuss specifics, but it can be said that the investigation has determined that the cases did not stem from random contact with strangers," he said.

Aurthorities said residents in the apartment complex should not be concerned about their safety as it relates to this incident.

Gilnyris was a student at West Milbrook Middle School.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Raleigh Police Department’s Detective Division at 919-890-3398 or CrimeStoppers at 919-226-CRIME.
