RALEIGH — State officials announced Thursday that thousands of North Carolina homeowners, renters, farmers, fishermen, business people and other citizens have applied for or already benefited from more than 98 percent of Hurricane Floyd relief funds approved by the General Assembly.

As of March 14, $821.6 million of the $836.6 million available had been spent, was committed to be spent, or had been applied for by victims.

Flooding from Floyd created the worst natural disaster in North Carolina's history, with $6 billion in damage to homes, businesses and the environment.
