DURHAM — Development around the DBAP may be downtown Durham's next big home run.
Plans call for major development around the ballpark in coming years, all leading to the creation of what will be called the Bull Durham District. Four major projects are in the works:A new county courthouse will sit east of the DBAP behind the big bull.A four-story office complex, called Diamond View 2, will take shape. On the west side of the park, the American Tobacco Complex will be filled with offices, apartments, shops and restaurants. The city also hopes to build a 5,000-seat performing arts center near Diamond View 2.
When will the Bull Durham District become a reality? The time frame is up in the air, but many of the projects should begin to take shape within five years.
Much of the plan hinges on the American Tobacco Complex. Developers say that they hope to begin renovations by the end of this year.
