Scotland County D.A. Seeks Justice In Attempted Murder of Sheriff's Deputy

Posted Updated

LAURINBURG — The two men accused of shooting a Scotland County Sheriff's deputy appeared in court Tuesday.

Seventeen-year-old Timothy Jordan and 36-year-old William Barefoot are charged with attempted murder. Investigators say they shot Major Dan Skamperle three times after a high-speed chase that ended in Hoke County.

District Attorney Kristy Newton says seeking justice in this case is personal.

"It's very difficult when it's one of your own who's shot. Additionally, my husband is a police officer, so it hits home for me," she says. "I'm very relieved Maj. Skamperle is OK, and it makes you rally want to do a good job on the case, although with any victim, you want to do a good job on the case."

Investigators say they have recovered the weapon used in the shooting. They also found several guns and rounds of ammunition stolen from Skamperle's patrol car in a wooded area.
