Ricky Sewell turned himself in to police on Tuesday regarding embezzlement charges. He is accused of stealing nearly $9,000 from Hecht's department store at Northgate Mall.
The decision by a Durham judge to give Sewell probation has angered city councilwoman Jackie Wagstaff, who is calling for a community meeting to discuss the ruling.
"I think she was failed in the system. As a parent and a concerned citizen, I think we should rally together to show there is support out there for this child and her parents," she says.
Sewell was originally charged with first-degree rape, but at the request of the victim's family, the charges were reduced so the young girl would not have to testify.
He is now on theNorth Carolina Sex Offender Registry.
