GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Police late Friday named a suspect in the Thursday slaying of a woman at the funeral of her boyfriend, who was shot to death last weekend.

Sharon Sheppard, 28, was shot in the parking lot of Mcintyre Funeral Home Thursday afternoon as she left the service for Raheim Antwon Kornegay, police said.

Kornegay, 23, was shot and killed Sunday inside the couple's apartment. Police had interviewed Sheppard, who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, early this week and had called her a "person of interest" in the case.

The shooting outside the funeral home created a chaotic scene, police said, noting they had difficulty obtaining a solid description of the gunman or getaway car from numerous witnesses.

Late Friday, Goldsboro police said they were searching for Kelvin Buffalo Jr. in connection with Sheppard's death.

"I'll just say that it's not random," Sgt. Chad Calloway of the Goldsboro Police Department said of Sheppard's slaying. "I would doubt that (the same person shot Sheppard and Kornegay)."

Lateiya Bunch grew up with Kornegay and lived in the apartment above him and Sheppard. She said she was still inside the funeral home at the time of the shooting.

"It's just a bad tragedy. It was devastating to me," Bunch said.

Kornegay and Sheppard had a 7-month-old child together and three older children from previous relationships living with them.

"It's a pretty tough situation to know that there are some children on Earth that, in the course of a couple of days, don't have either parent," Calloway said.

No charges have been filed in connection with either slaying, and police aren't disclosing a possible motive in either case.
