CARRBORO — The high winds spun by Hurricane Dennis hampered efforts to fight a fire in Carrboro early Monday morning.

Police say the fire that destroyed the Merritt Mills apartments was intentionally set at about 5:30 a.m.

Police arrested Thomas Thurber for setting fire to the apartments. Thurber reportedly admitted to dousing the building with gasoline and setting it ablaze.

He is charged with using an explosive or incendiary device. Thurber is in the Orange County jail on $5,000 bond.

A firefighter slightly injured in the blaze was treated and released.

The apartments were vacant because they were being renovated.
