Driver Falls From Truck Hanging from Highway Overpass

Posted Updated

ORANGE COUNTY — What looked like a scene from a movie actually played out on the highways of Orange County Wednesday evening.

During rush hour, a tractor-trailer was dangling in the air from an interstate overpass.

The accident happened where Interstates 40 and 85 split in Orange County. The Highway Patrol says the truck was heading east on Interstate 40 and was going too fast when it hit a curve. The trailer was hanging over Interstate 85, dumping watermelons onto the pavement.

The driver, Edward Odmon, 60, fell from the cab.

"As he ran into the curve, the truck went onto its side. The driver fell 35 to 40 feet," says Trooper T.S. Wright of theN.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver is hospitalized in serious condition at UNC Hospitals.
