New Hope Valley School Holds Open House

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Students in a Durham community now have a new place to make friends and memories.

The new Hope Valley Elementary school is open and just in time for the school year. Durham school leaders held an open house Sunday so the community could check out their new learning place. The original Hope Valley Elementary burned down in April, 1996.

"This was a real neighborhood school," says Principal Betsy Knott. "They have missed having a school in this neighborhood. Even older residents and people with no children in school wanted a school here."

Five boys were accused of starting a fire. Hope Valley Elementary had been in the community 70 years when it burned to the ground.
