I-95 Reopens After Double Fatality

Posted Updated

DUNN — Two people died in an early morning accident Monday on I-95. The wreck closed a section of the interstate from Benson to north of Dunn for three hours.

Authorities have identified the victims as Heimar Buitrago, 50, and his wife, Omayra, both of Lititz, Pa. Their son, Wilford Buitrago, 26, was driving. He suffered no major injuries but was taken to Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn. A 6-year-old in the back set was said to be unhurt.

Authorities said Buiitrago's Chrysler was heading south when it ran into an abandoned military vehicle about 5:30 a.m.

The military vehicle had been abandoned on the side of the road. The military vehicle from Fort Lee, Va., had broken down Sunday night, and its operators were at a truck stop waiting for a wrecker from Fort Lee to arrive.

The Buitrago couple was ejected from the vehicle. There is no word yet on possible charges.
