2 Boys Drown at Minnesott Beach

Posted Updated

MINNESOTT BEACH — Tragedy occurred this weekend at Minnesott Beach, where two boys drowned Saturday.

Police say an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old drowned while swimming with their grandfather. A third boy was rescued.

Authorities received a call around 2 p.m. about trouble at Minnesott Beach, at the mouth of the Neuse River near its confluence with the Pamlico Sound.

Search efforts were hampered by the heavy undertow and choppy conditions at the beach.

The body of the 8-year-old was recovered. Rescue teams also located the body of the 3-year-old but decided to wait until Sunday morning to recover it.

The names of the boys were not released Saturday.
