Volunteer Dies at Special Olympics

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — In the midst of all the celebration there is sadness. A Special Olympics volunteer collapsed and died after his shift at Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday.

It happened just outside gate nine around 5:30 Saturday night. Neale Orrok of Hendersonville had spent the afternoon setting up for the opening ceremonies. He was walking to a bus when he collapsed. A state trooper and medics performed CPR, but they were unable to save him.

Orrok was 62 years old.

His wife said the retired GE employee died doing what he loved -- helping others.
