Foxworthy and Friends Tee Up for Duke Children's Classic

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Comedian Jeff Foxworthy is always good for a laugh or two, but this weekend in Durham he and more than 70 of his celebrity friends are getting down to some serious golfing.

The Duke Children's Classic began Saturday at the Croasdaile Country Club.

The 26-year-old event is a way for celebrities like former football great Jim McMahon and television talk show host Maury Povich to have some fun on the links and raise money for the Duke Children's Hospital and Health Center.

"I play with all of these big athletes who can hit the ball 70 yards farther than me about three times a year. I play when I can," says Povich.

The Celebrity Players Tour is playing for a $200,000 purse to benefit Duke Children's Hospital.

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy has been chairing the Duke Children's Classic for three years.

"There's so many tournaments in this area and everybody's trying to kind of go after the same celebrities and I think this has been a real good move for us," says Foxworthy. "We toured the hospital yesterday, had the show on Thursday night, so it's been great"

The tournament, which continues Sunday, is now a stop on the Celebrity Players Tour.

Tickets are $12. You can get them throughTicketMasteror at Durham County Stadium off of I-85.
