Cumberland County Man Injured in House Fire

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — Cumberland County investigators are still trying to determine exactly what led to a house fire late Wednesday night.

Investigators believe 25-year-old James Kipp Averitt, who is mentally disabled, was playing with fire when he set himself ablaze.

Averitt was burned over 90 percent of his body and is in critical condition at the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals.

Averitt's mother received minor injuries while trying to put out the flames.

The family's home at Clark West Road, just outside of Fayetteville, also caught fire.

There is no estimate yet on the extent of the damage. Photographer: Lori Lichtenberg
