Durham Man Charged in Fatal Crash

Posted Updated

HILLSBOROUGH — State troopers have arrested a Durham man they say caused a car crash that left a 3-month-old girl dead earlier this month.

Melvin Alston of Durham is charged with murder. Troopers say he stole a car and led them on a 100-mile an hour chase on Interstate 85 that went from Alamance County into Orange County.

The patrol says Alston crashed into a Blazer with little Maria Domino and her family inside. The Blazer was tossed off the roadway, rolled over and came to rest upside down against a tree. Maria's parents emerged with minor injuries. The infant had been thrown from the vehicle and died several days later at a local hospital.

Alston and another man ran from the scene. Alston was arrested in Geensboro. He's now in the Orange County jail under no bond.

The other man, Maurice Ormond, is also in jail. He faces several charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle.
