The violence is frightening the small community north of Hillsborough where two elderly women have been assaulted in their own homes. Investigators are looking at the possibility one man is responsible for both attacks.
In April, a man broke into an elderly woman's home and sexually assaulted her. Early Monday morning, there was another attack.
"At this point, we're not sure if they are related," says Investigator Tim Horne of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "We do have similarities. The suspects are described as a black male, both victims are elderly, and both victims live north of Hillsborough on Highway 86."
Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect in the second attack. Residents admit the idea of one man preying on the elderly scares them.
Margaret Bradshaw and her family have lived in this rural area for decades. They're simply not used to this kind of violence.
"As far as I know it's a pretty safe area," says Sherman Bradshaw. "I don't think the crime is too high."
The fact is, crimeishere. And law enforcers say the elderly are vulnerable.
"[We] definitely keep in contact with them," says Horne. "[We] check on them daily, encourage them, of course, to lock their doors and not to let anyone in their residences they do not know."
