Durham Boy Dies, Attacked by Dogs

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Durham police say 8-year-old Jordan Schwarze went to a neighbor's house Thursday night to play with a friend, when was attacked by the family's dogs and died.

The girl was home alone with her older sister and told the boy she wasn't allowed to play while her parents were away. The boy scaled the 6 foot high fence to get in.

Durham Police Department Spokesman Fran Borden says, "The little girl heard the dogs barking. And at that point she came out and told him he had to leave. And at that point one or possibly two dogs started biting him."

Police say the girl was able to pull the dogs off the boy, secure the boy under a ladder, and run inside where her sister called 911.

The boy was taken to Duke University Medical Center, where he died.

Some neighbors say this was a vicious attack just waiting to happen. "I've heard them. They don't sound too nice," Jacqueline Ellis said. Another neighbor, Donna Self, calls the animals terrifying. "I normally take a walk in the afternoon, and as soon as I hit the corner, they just attack the fence."

The dogs were taken away and placed under observation for seven days. Authorities will then decide what should be done with them.

No charges have been filed against the family.

A memorial fund has been set up to pay for hospital and funeral expenses for Jordan Schwarze. Contributions can be sent to:
