Fayetteville Kidnap Victim Safe in NJ

Posted Updated

NEWARK, NJ — A Fayetteville man managed to pry open his car trunk and escape Sunday, thereby ending a 12-hour kidnap ordeal that began in North Carolina and ended in New Jersey.

Jason Atkins told police he was robbed and kidnapped by two unknown black males about 8:30 Saturday night. He had been accosted in a McDonald's parking lot at 542 Grove St. in Fayetteville.

After a 12-hour drive, which Atkins experienced from the confines of his trunk, he popped open the trunk lid and escaped from his abductors in Newark, N.J.

Atkins reported only minor bumps and bruises, along with ill effects from breathing the fumes of his car's exhaust.

The suspects drove off in Atkins' car, and may still have it. It is a white 1986 Pontiac 6000, with NC registration LSH-5950.
