LINDEN — Cumberland County officials have identified the two young women found dead near the small town of Linden. Authorities said the victims are 18-year-old Tracy Rose Lambert of Hope Mills and 25-year-old Susan Ray Moore of Fayetteville. Deputies are still searching for a suspect and a motive.
Anyone with any information about the crime is urged to call the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department at910-323-1500.
Lewis McNeil, 31, has been farming his land as long as he can remember, but he can't remember an instance where he was more scared.
Driving through the field Monday morning, he came across the bodies of two dead women, lying just 12 feet apart. Both victims had gunshot wounds. McNeil kept his distance and immediately called police.
"I didn't want to bother anything," said McNeil. "I didn't know if I'd be interrupting or not, so I did not go."
Police dogs searched the country roads near the field. One of them hit on a piece of clothing. Closer to the murder scene, police found tire tracks.
Investigators say they are unsure if the murders occurred in that area, or if the victims were just dropped off there.
One investigator said it can be difficult to determine if there was a struggle in a grassy area.
Investigators' don't believe the bodies were in the grassy area long. Resident Al Rinnie feared it wouldn't be long before something horrible like this happened.
"They paved the road about five to eight years ago and we just knew at that time there would be people coming in this area that had never been in the area before," said Rinnie. "Progress is not necessarily always good.
