I-95 Re-opened after Fatal Midday Accident

Posted Updated

KENLY — An accident involving a Buick Century and a tractor-trailer backed up traffic for several hours Wednesday afternoon on both southbound lanes of Interstate 95, just north of Kenly.

A section of I-95 around the scene was closed to traffic for a time. Only one southbound lane was opened around noon, and workers were on the site for several hours clearing debris from the road. By 3 p.m., all lanes were open and the road cleared.

The driver of the tractor-trailer had only minor injuries, but a woman inside the Buick Century struck by the truck was killed instantly.

Troopers say she apparently crossed the median and crossed over from the northbound lanes to the southbound.

The damage to her vehicle was extensive.
