DURHAM — An 18-year-old man was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train Wednesday morning, and dragged 130 feet to his death. Durham police say the teen was on his way to work at the Durham Lumber Company when he was hit.

It happened about 8 a.m. when the man, walking east along the tracks, failed to move off the tracks despite the fact that the train's engineer blew the whistle as a warning. The engineer says he saw the young man, blew the whistle and tried to brake, but the teen didn't move off the tracks along Hillsborough Road..

Family members say the teen was not suicidal and had not been partying the night before.

Police have not yet released the young man's name.
