Pittsboro, N.C. — A Chatham County sheriff's deputy was killed early Wednesday in a single-vehicle wreck, authorities said.
Deputy Aaron Gabriel Whitaker, 24, of N.C. Highway 42 in Carbonton, was off-duty when he was involved in an accident in Moore County at about 2:45 a.m., authorities said.
The wreck occurred on a rural road near Carthage, and Whitaker was thrown from his vehicle after hitting a power pole, authorities said.
Whitaker had been employed with the Moore County Sheriff's Office for three years before joining the Chatham County Sheriff's Office two months ago.
