4 Durham Officers Drop Suit

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Four current and former Durham police officers have dropped their lawsuits against the city, former Police Chief Jackie McNeil, and former City Manager Orville Powell.

The suit alleged the officers had been retaliated against for reporting sexual harassment.

Sherrod Banks, a private attorney representing the city, says the move shows the allegations were false and that it vindicates his clients. Wes Covington, an attorney representing the four officers who dropped their lawsuit, calls their decision part of a legal tactical move.

Covington says the claims are valid and will be pursued elsewhere.

Former detective Paul Martin is still suing.

The trial is scheduled for early August.

Another plaintiff in the case withdrew in April 1997.
