NC Beaches Back in Business

Posted Updated

WILMINGTON — Hurricane Fran left a huge path of destruction when she ravaged our state almost two years ago. The coast took an especially hard hit, but things have changed dramatically.

It took a lot of hard work to cleanup but that effort is paying off for everyone.

Today, lots of folks found their way to Wrightsville Beach, where the sun was shining and the ocean looked inviting. The beach blankets, coolers, and Frisbees were in evidence. Beachgoers had to look hard to find remnants of the Fran damage.

Wrightsville real estate agent Julie Cunius says one of her properties has been closed for the two years since Fran; this season it is open and every unit is rented for the full season -- so she says things are a whole lot better.

That assessment is shared by storeowners, and hotel and restaurant managers and it makes them very happy. Business, they say, is better than it was last year at this time.

One important component in the economic mix? Day-trippers coming down from the Triangle.
