Monitor Relics Raised

Posted Updated

CAPE HATTERAS — Saturday night, divers raised the propeller and drive shaft from the sunken wreckage of the Monitor, a battleship sunk during the Civil War.

The salvaged pieces are the largest objects ever recovered from the wreck.

Modern day treasure hunters are at work off the North Carolina Coast.

Navy divers will continue mapping and surveying the wreckage of the Monitor, which is situated 16 miles off Cape Hatteras.

The Union ironclad sank during a storm in 1862.
