Families Celebrate Their International Children

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — A happy celebration had parents and their international children smiling Sunday in Chapel Hill.

Parents threw a pool party for the children they've adopted from foreign countries. Many of them came from Guatemala.

This is not a "first-time" event -- the parents and kids get together a few times a year to share their experiences.

"If you decide to go outside the country, there are many families that have done it and are in the process of doing it. And it's been a very positive experience for all of us," said Janice Freedman.

Parents say it's important for kids to meet other children from their native countries who share the same family experience.

About 40 local families belong to this group.
