Man Responsible for Smithfield Hostage Crisis is Sentenced

SMITHFIELD — The man who held three women hostage in a Johnston County outlet store will spend at least wix years in jail. Roy Zacharias was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to armed robbery and three counts of kidnapping.

The hostage situation took place in February at the Oneida silverware store in Smithfield.

Zacharias eventually released the women unharmed in exchange for two hamburgers and a pack of cigarettes.. before surrendering.
