Jury Convicts Harnett Arsonist of Murder

Posted Updated

LILLINGTON — She blazed her way to riches by burning down a home. With the home, she took two lives.

Thursday, a Harnett County jury found 19-year-old Vera Sue Lee guilty of killing an eight year old boy and his great-grandmother to cash-in on an insurance policy.

Last June, investigators found the bodies of Brian and Frances Brewington in their burned out rural Harnett County farm house.

Frances Brewington had been stabbed to death. The boy's father said that he wants an eye for an eye.

"I'm hoping for the death penalty, that's what I'm hoping for," the boy's father Patrick Brewington said. "I'll be more than happy if they seek that."

The sentencing phase begins Friday, and Lee could receive the death penalty. The eight-year-old's uncle and a third suspect are also charged with murder.

Their trial dates have not been set.
