RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Mike Easley welcomed the Barton College men’s basketball team to the executive mansion Wednesday and proclaimed the day Bulldog Men’s Basketball Day in honor of the team’s NCAA Division-II National Championship.
Almost two weeks ago, the team defeated Winona State University 77-75 to capture the title. The team finished the regular Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) season with a 19-1 record and also went on to win the CVAC tournament for the second year in a row.

“I congratulate you on your first NCAA championship title,” said Easley. “This is an accomplishment no other athletic team in the history of Barton College can claim.”

Members of the team and coaching staff were presented with the Laurel Wreath Award, the state’s honor for outstanding achievement in athletics.
