Just before 8 p.m. Sunday, divers were called to a pond off Coley Farm Road near Fuquay-Varina.
About 30 minutes later they recovered the body of a man who had drowned.
Charles Wayne Richardson would have been 38 years old next month. He lived at 211 Coley Farm Road.
Witnesses told authorities Richardson was last seen riding his four-wheel all-terrain vehicle around the farm pond when the vehicle overturned, tossing him into the water. They said once he got out he realized his gun had fallen into the pond. Neighbors said he then waded back through the tall grass that borders the lake and disappeared.
Richardson worked at Action Glass of the Triangle in Apex.
The Wake County medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
