Store Employees Detain Would-Be Robber, Suspect Later Dies

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Raleigh police say employees of the Food Lion on Avent Ferry road called Sunday to report a robbery, but by the time police arrived the employees had detained the suspect.

Raleigh Police Captain Mike Longmire says the employees chased 24-year-old Jason Paul Cort of Cary into a nearby wooded area where they caught him.

Emergency medical personnel treated the suspect for minor cuts at the scene. Suspecting that he had consumed alcohol, police then transported the suspect to Wake Medical Center, where he died Wednesday morning.

Longmire says police have an initial autopsy report, but would not release any information pending results of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Cort's death.
