Cary Abduction Attempt Prompts Reports of Others in Wake Co.

Posted Updated

CARY — The attempted kidnapping of a 12-year-old girl has shattered the security of a Cary community. Now detectives say they're getting similar reports of abduction attempts all over Wake County.

The middle school student was approached by the suspect Wednesday afternoon as she walked home from school. A police composite drawing of the suspect is being passed around schools.

Cary Police Lt. Christopher Hoina says his department has taken a lot of phone calls since Wednesday's attempt was publicized.

"What we're hearing from women is 'hey, a similar situation happened to me' over here in Raleigh, over here in Wake County, over here in Johnston County," said Hoina. "So we're hearing about a lot of women who are being victimized by the same situation."

Until the suspect in Wednesday's incident is arrested schools, parents and children have been put on alert. Students are being reminded to take correct routes when walking to and from school.

The suspect is 6 feet tall, and weighs about 220 pounds. Witnesses say he was driving an older black car, possibly a Mercedes, with some damage.
