Kids Play With Food in Smithfield

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — When we were young, our parents told us not to play with our food, but this weekend in Smithfield, that rule will not apply.

Children are turning sweet potatoes into works of art in Smithfield during the city's "What's that Yam Thing?" contest. The competition is part of the town's annual "Ham and Yam" festival which began Friday afternoon.

Downtown Smithfield spokesperson Scott Simpher says the streets of Smithfield will likely be packed.

Saturday morning, rain or shine, vendors and specialty exhibits will line the streets in downtown Smithfield. The festival runs through Sunday.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors are expected over the festival's three days.
